At Lou Handicrafts, we are dedicated to the art of handmade tile-making, combining centuries-old techniques with a passion for craftsmanship. Our tiles are produced in two categories: earthenware-based and brick-based, both created entirely by hand. Inspired by the rich ceramic traditions of 9th- and 10th-century Kashan and Ray (Iran), we strive to revive forgotten methods and glazes, ensuring each piece reflects true historical artistry.
The Art of Handmade Tiles
From raw clay to a beautifully finished tile, every step of our process is carried out with precision and care. The journey begins with shaping and sculpting the clay, followed by drying, engraving, and refining each tile to perfection. Once ready, they are hand-painted and glazed before being fired in the kiln—sometimes up to four times—to achieve the most vibrant colors and textures. Unlike industrially manufactured tiles, our process embraces natural variations in color, shade, texture, and size, making each tile unique. These subtle differences are not flaws but a signature of true craftsmanship, adding depth and authenticity to any space. Even after years of experience, we remain just as excited to open the kiln, knowing that no two tiles will ever be exactly the same. This unpredictability is what makes our work so special. It is the beauty of artisanal tile-making.
Characteristics of Our Tiles
Size & Finish: Expect slight variations in thickness (+/- 1mm), surface irregularities, and tonal depth, enhancing the organic appeal of each tile. Applicable Standards: As our tiles are handcrafted and not industrially standardized, they do not fall under international norms such as CE, ISO, or DIN. They are designed primarily for interior or exterior installation and serve as artistic, timeless elements in any setting.
